James Mitchell Obituary

Brother James Mitchell was born June 7, 1948 in Midway, Florida to the late Samuel and Ruth Mitchell. He departed this earthly life on October 3, 2024 with his wife next to his bedside.

Brother James Mitchell confessed Christ and joined Mt. Pilgrim Primitive Baptist Church where he served faithfully until God called him home. He served on the hospitality committee at his church, sang heavenly songs in the senior choir, and with the Florida Georgia Male Chorus. Most of all He was a man of faith. He was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend.

Brother James Mitchell was an entrepreneur. He built his own home. He was his own mechanic. He was a great cook. After his accident lead him into retirement, he decided he wanted to become a cook, and so a cook he became. He was the owner of Big Daddy Bar-B-Que where he served most of the big bend area and surrounding counties. Known for the best ribs in town, James was awarded many trophies and certificates for being an outstanding cook. He found true happiness in the slow smoke of ribs, and the laughter that accompanied every backyard gathering. Whether rain or shine, he was out by the grill, tongs in hand, crafting meals that fed both the body and the soul. His secret sauces and perfectly grilled meats were legendary, but it was the love and care he put into every meal that made each barbecue unforgettable.

He leaves to cherish his memories his loving and devoted wife Sarah Wright Mitchell of Quincy, FL; three daughters Jessica Mitchell of Quincy, FL, Jamila Fain of Havana, FL, and Valeria Osborne of Kinsey, AL; two sons Terry Mitchell (Stephanie) of Quincy, FL, and Micheal Mitchell of Quincy, FL; one brother Eddie Jones (Betty) of West Palm Beach; aunts Bessie People, Idella Price, Mildred Alexandria, Demorris Liggon and Dell Wilson; two brothers-in-law Marvin Wright Sr. (Mary) of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Eugene Wright of Quincy, FL; three sisters-in-law Juanita LaBay of Worcester, MA, Cynthia Williams (Anthony) of Orlando, FL, and Brenda Daniels (Dale) of Tallahassee, FL; 15 grandchildren Janiya, Jay’Lani, Mario, Terry Jr. (Monet), Kendric (Te’Ericka), Shadrick, Brandon, LaPorcia, Shalequia, Jhamycianna, KeaAundranique, Nykerria, Jameria, John’Derrious, and John Shelly; 20 great grands Jayla, Jaylen, Jariyah, Khani, Khamari, Kyson, Kensley, Kylie, Kaleigh, Journee, Jha’Ra, Jayden, Ryleigh, Talyah, Kace, Kaison, Jream, Jaxson, Malaysia, and Chloe; godchildren Timothy Stergeon, Clarissa Wilson, Brittany Brown, DalbertBrown Jr., and Tamila Wright; best friends/brothers & sisters James and Lillie Denson, Maxine and Terry Sweet, Patrick and Melissa Bradwell, Reverend Earl Williams, Roosevelt and Sarah Mitchell, and Harry Jones; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends who loved him dearly.
